Description

Golden Falls® Redbud brings together the beautiful spring flowering of our native eastern redbud with brilliant foliage and an elegant weeping habit. Before the leaves emerge in spring, the cascading branches are decorated with clusters of lavender-pink flowers.

After flowering, heart-shaped leaves emerge in shades of orange-gold before developing their characteristic bright golden-yellow to chartreuse color. The foliage provides outstanding color throughout the growing season.

Its narrow, cascading form makes Golden Falls® particularly valuable where you want the impact of a specimen tree without sacrificing a large amount of garden space.

Best Uses

Golden Falls® is ideal as a specimen or focal-point tree where its cascading habit can be fully appreciated. Plant it near a patio, walkway, garden entrance, courtyard or within a mixed shrub and perennial border.

Its relatively narrow spread also makes it a good choice for smaller residential gardens and locations where a broad-growing tree would require too much room.

Planting & Care

Plant Golden Falls® in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Dig the planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper. Position the root flare at or slightly above the surrounding soil level.

Water thoroughly after planting and provide consistent moisture during the first growing season. Deep watering encourages the development of a strong root system.

Apply 2–3 inches of mulch over the root zone, keeping the mulch several inches away from the trunk.

Little pruning is normally required. Remove dead, damaged or crossing branches as needed while preserving the tree's natural cascading form.

Franklin Brothers’ Central NC Advice

Golden Falls® is especially well suited to the North Carolina Piedmont. It will tolerate full sun, but in our hot Central NC summers, a location receiving morning sun with some protection from the strongest late-afternoon heat can help maintain attractive foliage.

Good drainage is particularly important. Avoid low areas where water remains around the roots following heavy rainfall.

Keep newly planted trees consistently watered through their first summer. Once established, water deeply during extended periods of hot, dry weather.

Give Golden Falls® enough open space to display its cascading branches. Avoid crowding it between larger shrubs where its distinctive weeping form will be hidden.

The cultivar is protected by U.S. Plant Patent PP31,658, so unauthorized asexual propagation is prohibited while the patent remains in effect.
