Commonly known as Pennsylvania Sedge, this soft-textured native sedge forms graceful, low-growing colonies that resemble a fine woodland grass. Its arching green foliage creates a naturalistic groundcover ideal for shaded landscapes, woodland gardens, slopes, and under trees. Unlike traditional turf grass, it thrives in dry shade and requires very little maintenance once established.
Care Guide
- Light: Best in part shade to full shade, though it tolerates morning sun in cooler climates.
- Water: Water regularly during establishment. Once mature, it is fairly drought tolerant.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter but adapts to many soil types.
- Temperature: Hardy perennial suited for a wide range of climates.
- Maintenance: Minimal care needed. Can be lightly trimmed in late winter or early spring to refresh foliage.
- Growth Habit: Slowly spreading clumps create a soft, meadow-like carpet about 6–12 inches tall.
- Landscape Uses: Excellent alternative to turf in shady areas, erosion control, woodland borders, and native plant gardens.
- Wildlife Value: Native species that supports beneficial insects and contributes to natural ecosystems.
