Description

‘Tamukeyama’ is a beautiful laceleaf Japanese maple prized for its finely dissected foliage, cascading form, and outstanding color. New spring growth emerges deep crimson to purple-red and matures to rich burgundy through much of the growing season. In fall, the foliage develops brilliant shades of scarlet and red.

Its naturally graceful, weeping habit creates an elegant focal point without requiring a large amount of vertical space.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Deep burgundy-red, finely cut foliage

  • Graceful cascading and weeping form

  • Brilliant red fall color

  • Excellent specimen for smaller landscapes

  • Provides beautiful color and texture for several seasons

Best Uses

Plant ‘Tamukeyama’ as a specimen tree, foundation accent, courtyard feature, Japanese garden focal point, or near a patio or walkway where its branching structure and delicate foliage can be appreciated.

It also performs beautifully in large decorative containers when provided adequate moisture and protection from excessive afternoon heat.

Planting & Care

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil and water thoroughly after planting. Maintain consistent moisture during the first several growing seasons while the root system becomes established.

A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps conserve moisture and moderate soil temperatures. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk. Little pruning is necessary beyond removing dead, damaged, or crossing branches.

Franklin Brothers’ Central NC Advice

In Central North Carolina, ‘Tamukeyama’ performs best where it receives morning sun with some protection from the hottest afternoon sun. Avoid extremely hot, dry locations next to pavement or south- and west-facing walls. Consistent moisture and an organic mulch layer will help protect the delicate foliage during our hot summers.

Good to Know

‘Tamukeyama’ is one of the classic red laceleaf Japanese maples. Its relatively compact size, dependable color, and mature cascading form make it an excellent choice where homeowners want the beauty of a Japanese maple without planting a large shade tree.
